A bad or unmaintained engine will run abnormally. It can cause concerns of excessive fuel consumption, leaks, foul odors, random starting, etc., could manifest serious and sensitive failures for the boat's navigation.
Therefore, regular maintenance is highly recommended. After every trip, especially when sailing in saltwater, simple procedures are recommended to clean your engine. These small steps of ½ hour time can be helpful to verify correct operation and quickly detect any malfunctions (water, fuel, oil leaks, overheating, or water pump malfunction). This step will also confirm that the anodes are performing their function correctly and that the parts of your engine are not subject to abnormal corrosion.
To ensure your engine is working properly, it is highly recommended to have it checked by a professional before each season, who will take care of it and provide more extended longevity. Of course, it is possible to do the maintenance yourself. Is your outboard stored dry, or is your boat in a port with access to fresh water? After each trip, it is recommended to flush the engine and run it with fresh water to remove the salt from inside.
